Understanding Medicare Guidelines

In order to qualify for home health services under Medicare, a patient must:

  • Be eligible for Medicare benefits
  • Be under the care of a physician who establishes and reviews the plan of care
  • Require skilled nursing on an intermittent basis or some type of continually therapy
  • Be requesting services that are reasonable and necessary for their illness or injury

Not only that, but a patient must be essentially homebound to be eligible for home healthcare. This means that a patient’s condition prevents them from leaving home or requires taxing effort. If they do leave home, it is typically for the purpose of medical treatment or care. If a patient’s illness or injury restricts their ability to seek medical care outside of their home without the aid of a supportive device, they will typically be deemed homebound. A patient may also leave for short durations for religious services. However, if a patient receives home health services and is determined to be, at any point, no longer homebound, they may not be reimbursed for additional expenses under Medicare benefits.
